Prophet Adam A.S is regarded in Islam as the first human being, the first prophet, and the father of humanity. His story carries profound lessons about creation, obedience, sin, repentance, and divine mercy.
The Beginning of Creation
Allah ﷻ announced to the angels His plan to create a khalifah (vicegerent) on Earth. The angels questioned, fearing humans might cause corruption and bloodshed, but Allah replied: “Indeed, I know what you do not know” (Qur’an 2:30).
Adam was created from clay gathered from different parts of the Earth, symbolizing the diversity of mankind. Allah fashioned him with His own hands and breathed into him His spirit, granting Adam life and dignity.
The Gift of Knowledge
To establish Adam’s honored status, Allah taught him the names of all things. This unique gift of knowledge distinguished him from the angels. When Allah presented objects to the angels, they could not name them, but Adam did—showing his special role as the first steward of Earth.
The Prostration and Iblis’s Arrogance
Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam. All obeyed except Iblis, a jinn among them. Out of arrogance, Iblis declared: “I am better than him. You created me from fire, and him from clay” (Qur’an 7:12).
This refusal led to Iblis being cast out of Allah’s mercy. He vowed to mislead Adam and his descendants until the Day of Judgment, establishing the eternal struggle between good and evil.
Life in Paradise
To ease Adam’s solitude, Allah created Hawwa (Eve) from Adam’s rib. They lived in Jannah (Paradise), enjoying its blessings with one command: “Do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers” (Qur’an 2:35).
Iblis deceived them, whispering that eating from the tree would grant immortality or angelic status. Adam and Hawwa ate, disobeying Allah’s command.
Descent to Earth
As a consequence, Adam and Hawwa were sent down to Earth. According to Islamic tradition, they were separated but later reunited at Mount Arafat. On Earth, Adam learned to plant, harvest, and live as the first human. He also taught repentance, for Allah accepted his sincere plea for forgiveness.
